Sunlight, your skin and your eyes

Although sun is good for us, as it gives us light, warmth, and vitamin D production, it stimulates free radical generation within the skin. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, mainly due to sun exposure. Sunscreens are misleading, as we tend to stay longer in the sun. They also give protection against burning rays not damaging rays.
It is important to use sunscreen, which gives protection against both ultraviolet A & B (UVA and UVB).

Cataract and UV rays

In the same manner the ultraviolet rays of the sun can damage the lens of the eye.

Research has shown that this could be a contributing factor for developing cataract. Cataract is a condition whereby the lens of the eye is damaged and opacities may occur within it. Understandably, when the lens is unclean it cannot collect the light and focus on to the retina. As a result one could not see clearly. This is why we need to protect our eyes against ultraviolet light.

Macular degeneration and UV rays

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60 years old in many parts of the world. Macula is part of the retina which is responsible for central vision. Macular degeneration has two types dry and wet. The dry form causes gradual loss of central vision and eventually blindness. There is no proven treatment for the dry type at present. The wet type is more rapidly progressive and will eventually cause blindness however it could be treated by laser photocoagulation.

Studies have shown that free radicals produced within the eye as a result of visible blue light and high-energy ultraviolet rays can be risk factor for developing macular degeneration. Hence it is crucial to protect your precious eyes by wearing high-quality sunglasses with good UV protection.

What is UV?

Ultraviolet rays are invisible bands of energy produced from the sun. There are three wavelengths: UVA, the most harmful, may cause damage to the lens of the eye and as discussed with prolong exposure can lead to development of cataract. UVB rays penetrate the atmosphere and cause sunburn and snow blindness. UVC rays are naturally filtered by the sun’s ozone layer.

When do you need protection?

As the ozone layer is damaged further by the environmental pollution, UV protection becomes more and more important. You need to protect your eyes everyday, whether cloudy or sunny. Every bit of exposure to UV radiation can have a long-term and snowballing effect on your sight.

Many people take it for granted that because they are wearing sunglasses, they are protected. Sadly, this isn’t true. Lenses require special treatment to truly protect against the UV rays. Corona range offers maximum UV protection by the manufacturers for all of its sunglasses.

A guide for choosing a suitable frame for your face

Triangular Face

Triangular faces are generally small, have a wider forehead and cheekbones that shrink to a narrow chin

Frame choice

Top lines should be straighter and side lines should be lower, rounding outward away from the face

Oblong Face

The width of forehead, cheekbone and chin are similar, forming a long line from cheekbones to chin

Frame choice

Strong top horizontal lines or top outer corners with oval or rounded lower lines

Round Face

Round forehead, full cheeks & chins

Frame choice

Angular or straight lines, a touch wider than your face

Oval Face

Face is evenly balanced with medium forehead, high cheekbones with narrow and somewhat round chin

Frame choice

You’re lucky, pick any, just pick the right size for your face

Square Face

Broad forehead, straight lines from cheekbone to jaw. Square fashioned chin

Frame choice

Oval or rounded lines minimum as wide as your face
